Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman’s Wharf Fishing Report September 07, 2005

We have enjoyed still another week of fabulous Flounder fishing here at the Wharf! Limit catches, citation sized fish and nice folks catching their biggest Flounders ever have been all too common over the past seven days. I keep thinking that it can’t be as good as it has been but the doormat fish continue to bite our hooks and please anglers.

Northeast winds made for some tough conditions over the Holiday weekend with Labor Day proving to be the worst day that we have had on Fluke in several weeks however this struggle with Mother Nature came on the heels of one fishy week! Bill Sauscman from Pa. had the pleasure of picking last week for his fishing vacation. Billy likes to keep track of the fish that he catches and before he left Saturday he told me that he never dreamed of catching so many Flounder this past week and that he figured that he had landed around 120 Flounders in his six days of fishing. Billy had a limit of nice keepers each day and also caught one of the biggest fish landed over the past week weighing in a citation doormat over nine pounds. Just about everyone that fished with me this past week saw some excellent action.

I had mentioned last week that we had been seeing a lot of “double headers” with the Flounder. While it is really not uncommon to see this while fishing for Flounder it is really not that common to see doubles on keeper sized fish especially when they have to be 17 ½”. I lost count on how many keeper doubles I have seen but I saw enough to go back to a two-hook rig even though I knew it would be easier to hold bottom with a single hook. Rich Adams from Lewes had to sit down and catch his breath after landing this Double of a lifetime Fluke while fishing with me this past weekend. Rich was using close to a pound of weight in 90 feet of water when this pair hit his rig. The bigger of the two earned Rich a state citation tipping the scales at well over the required 7 lbs. and the smaller fish was almost 6lbs.

While we have undoubtedly had another super week with big Flounder I can’t help but to think that this ride we have been on will soon take a turn. It will be hard to match some of the Flounder action that I have seen in the past couple of weeks. The good news is they are still here and there are shots of fish in a lot of different areas. As I write this report I am on my third only day inshore in as many months and it is Northeast winds coupled with a lack of sponsors that left me tied to the dock today. These winds have plagued us over the past couple of days and it didn’t break my heart to stay ashore on this day. I know that Croakers and Trout are on the move now and some of them have even showed up in the areas where we have been catching just Flounder. In the upcoming weeks I would expect to see a nice mixed bag of fish on some of our trips including Flounder, Sea Bass, Croakers and Snapper Blues. I will continue to concentrate on catching these big Flounder as long as they are around and I will gladly accept anything else that might bite the hooks. There is nothing more fun than catching a variety of fish and not really knowing what may bite the hook next. Fabulous fall fishing is here!

Offshore fishing has also been good over this past week. Tuna is the hot item with boats having their best catches on the chunk so far this year. Captains H.D. and Justin had the 110 foot Thelma Dale V out over the weekend and landed 16 Yellow fin Tuna with the biggest one weighing in at 110 pounds. Pictures were not available at the time of this writing however I am told that they have some great shots. I will try to get them in next week. We have several spaces open for these 22hr. special Tuna chunking trips with the big boat. If you are interested in reserving a spot or you would like information on any other trips out of the Wharf please check out the web site or give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Until Next Week Happy Fishing!
