Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report September 3, 2004

As a fisherman I should have known better. It happens all the time. The minute that you brag about a catch, that’s usually it. The fishing is never really the same after that. It’s not that our fishing has been that bad, in fact, most folks think that it’s been pretty good. I think it’s perhaps the fact that some of the fishing we have seen over the past few weeks may have quite possibly spoiled us.

We are still concentrating on catching Flounder and Sea Bass with our All-Day trips. Our total landings for this past week have been pretty good with these fish but the size of fish we have been catching have not quite matched the quality of some of the fish that we had been seeing for a couple of weeks now running.

This past weekend we saw our first stumbling block that we’ve had in several days. Good weather and good crowds were the ingredients for what I like to call a "Saturday Sting." While it was not a true sting in the sense of the word, the catch sure fell short of most everyone’s expectations, especially mine. Spring tides and a cooky drift were at least somewhat responsible for the lack of action. At times the fishing was good but the keeper ratio was not. Anglers fished as light as 4 ozs. in the morning, and then went to as much as 12 ozs. of lead in the afternoon. Some nice fish were caught, but nothing like we had seen in the past few days.

We have managed to keep over 220 Flat fish since my last report, and I am certain that we must have caught at least three to four times that amount. This has made for some good action around the rails. Sea Bass are still mixed in with our catch, however the numbers of these fish are not what you would expect to see for this time of year. I do believe that the Sea Bass action will improve in the upcoming weeks.

Even though we have not been seeing the number of big Flounder that we have seen over these past few weeks, we do still manage to have a fish in the five to six pound class take the fish pool for the biggest fish on every trip. Limit catches of Flounder have not been as common as they were the last couple of weeks, but most anglers have had lots of action with measurable fish and are catching more than enough for supper. This action should continue in the upcoming weeks and at times will no doubt be better. The fish are around, we just need for everything to fall into place for us to have that "big day."

I would like to send out special congratulations to Capt. H.D. and his wife Ann. Ann gave birth a couple of days ago to our future Master Parron Kinnikin Parsons. Parron weighed in at seven pounds nine ounces and reportedly has a full head of hair! Best of luck to the newest addition to the Parsons family!

Capt. H.D. has a 22 hr. Tuna trip scheduled for this weekend hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will see some good weather for this trip. We will continue with our daily schedule on both the Full and the Half-Day trips. If you would like more information on trips sailing out of the wharf please check out our website at fishlewes.com or give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Until next time Happy Fishing!
