Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report August 5, 2004

As we start out with the month of August the fishing news couldn’t be much better. On just about all fronts, Offshore as well as Inshore, anglers have been seeing good catches of fish. Along with this past week’s full blue moon, the fish seemed to have been taking advantage of the swift moving currents and they have been moving around and feeding in several different locations.

In the Delaware Bay the Croakers have shown up in just about every slough and on every hard-edged bottom around. In the Atlantic Ocean Tuna, Marlin, and Dolphin have been abundant on the inshore lumps and along the edges of the deep canyons. Closer to the beach, Flounder and Croakers have been hitting on and around the artificial reefs and around some of the rocky ledges of the open bottom near the "old grounds." There have even been some rumors of a few Sea Bass being caught around the docks over the past several days.

Aboard the All-Day boat Keen Lady IV this past week we have seen a variety of fish consisting mostly of Croakers. Lucky anglers have been walking away on some days with as many as 30 or 40 Croakers that have been in the 12 to 17 inch range. Even on the slower days these fish have provided steady action for everyone. We are still seeing a good variety of fish including Blues, some small Trout and Porgies as well as a few Blowfish and Flounder.

The Flounder have been somewhat of a disappointment for me over this past week but I believe this is because most of our angling efforts have been concentrated on catching the Croakers. We have only kept about 20 Flounder since my last report for more than twice that number caught.

With some good weather and a little luck I expect our Flounder catches to be much better in the upcoming weeks. Our fishing recently has been almost exclusively up in the Delaware Bay. With the right weather and tidal conditions we will be spending more time fishing out in the Ocean and we should be seeing a variety of fish which will include Flounder, Croakers, Sea Bass and Triggerfish.

August has always been a good fishing month. Warm sea temperatures will bring just about any species of fish within our reach and the seasonably good weather will make for some excellent fishing possibilities. Couple this with the small crowds that we have been seeing on the headboats recently and you have the makings for a very memorable fishing adventure!
