Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report August 26, 2004

Angler’s Fishing onboard the Full-Day boat Keen Lady IV this past week have once again enjoyed fabulous Flounder Action! The news of big Flounder has been spreading around the docks like wild fire while fisherman continue to bring home Flounder that have been tipping the scales at over five pounds on a regular basis.

This has been one of the best weeks for big Flounder in recent history. In just the past six days not only have we weighed in fourteen citation sized Flounder, we have also had countless fish that have fallen just shy of the required size. Considering that Delaware will only honor a seven pound or bigger Flounder for a state citation these fish are certainly something to brag about!!

We continue to see a variety of fish but mostly all of our efforts have been with catching the Fluke. Sea Bass have been coming over the rails with the Flounder still, only the majority of them have been on the small side. We even saw a few Slammer Blues mixed in with the catch one day, but the Flounder have by far been our Catch of the day.

We have landed close to 400 keeper Flounder since last Friday folks and the majority of these fish have been real nice in size. Windy conditions made drifting tough over the weekend but we were still able to anchor over some good bottom and pick away at a decent number of big fish, both Flounder and Bass.

By Monday the winds had calmed down enough for us to go back on the drift and we landed over 110 keeper flat fish. Even though this number sounds good, the most memorable part would have to be the size of the fish we caught. Many of them were well over four and five pounds. Tuesdays action was almost just as good landing close to 100 keeper Flounder, however by Wednesday swift ebb current and east winds gave us a dose of reality and we only managed to land a couple of dozen keepers. As I write this, the fishing is decent but we are once again fishing with 12 ounces. of lead.

Barry Chappelle of Upper Marlboro has the honors on the board with his 9 lb. 13 oz. Flounder he weighed in on Friday. Eleven year old Even Frymer of Ephrata can boast of a 7 lb. 7oz. Flattie which makes him the youngest to catch a citation Flounder this year. Tommy Otto of Dover, Tim Murray of Chambersburg, Earl Martis of Rehoboth and Jenny Holston from Baltimore have all weighed in Flounder over 7 lbs. earning them citations in the past few days.

Just to give you an idea how thick these fish are, even yours truly was able to land a Flounder weighing over seven pounds. This is the first citation Fluke that I’ve caught since I was a kid! Locals; Sandor Czeiner (Alex) from Lewes, and Mike Johnson, also from Lewes have both landed Flounder over nine pounds this week, and Courtney Houpt from Pennsville landed a Sea bass tipping the scales at 3 lbs. 6 oz.

There were so many other nice fish it is hard to remember them all. This I must think is a good thing, I am however sorry for not mentioning all of them. I hope to continue catching Flounder like this for a while and things are looking good for us to do just that. There is a nice spread of fish and they are in a few different locations. We should see some of these fish well into September unless we have a major weather event.
