Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman’s Wharf Fishing Report August 10, 2005

If I were to just pick out one day out of this past week to write about the report would be much easier for me to put together. Problem is there are seven days in a week. It would be easy for me to pick the days not to write about, but it wouldn’t be quite as easy to pick out the one that would stand above the rest. I have definitely seen some outstanding fishing over the past seven days!

Flounder continue to be the catch of the day and boy have I seen some Flounder over this past week! Big ones, little ones, even double headers of throwbacks as well as keepers. At times this past week, Flounder fishing has been as good as I have seen all year. Of course you have to take the good with the bad. I have also seen some ragged days. This seems to go with the turf. Fortunately the good days have been outnumbering the bad!

The swift moving currents and the fast drifts of last week finally gave way to a much kinder gentler ocean making that all-important “staying in touch with the bottom” not such a task. Oh there were times that we went with the 10’s and the 12’s but for most of our trips 8 oz. of lead or less has been sufficient. I have had days where we have literally landed hundreds of Flounders! On the average we have had about a four to one ratio with the throwbacks. This ratio does vary from day to day. One day we had over 80 keepers and only about 30 throwbacks and on the flipside just yesterday we landed over 300 Flatties and kept right around 75. Limits have been common on just about every trip, and the action has been pretty steady. We have been able to mix in a few Sea Bass with the catch but really not many Bass have been coming over the rail. The catch is still predominately Flounder. I still fully expect to start seeing more of a variety of fish in the near future with Croakers and more Bass.

Fish are moving around a little now and are starting to show up in places that just a few days ago there were none. Water temperatures have been in the upper seventies and the ocean water has been crystal clear. Seeing a big Fluke rise from the depths well below the surface is quite a sight! Even though it is common to see the water this clear at this time of the year I must admit that this year it seems as though it has been much more often. Beautiful weather and calm seas with this water clarity makes for some pretty nifty sights. I have never before seen as many Flying fish this close to shore as I have seen in these past few weeks. We have also seen small Mahi and large Cobia swimming around the boat and some of the Lobster pots regularly. Never really seem to have a bait ready at the right time though.

On other fronts our Half-Day boat is still bringing in good numbers of Croaker however not quite as consistently as just a couple of weeks ago. Capt, Mike attributes this to the fish moving around more than they were in the prior weeks. They can go out one morning and catch the daylights out of them and go right back out for the next trip and end up looking around and wondering what happened. These fish do have heads and tails and tend to use them both! The bright side of this Croaker fishery would be that the average fish tend to be a little larger now. Many Croaks have tipped the scales at over 2 lbs.

Tuna fishing has gotten a little better over the past few days also and there have been several White Marlin and Wahoo landed by some of the offshore charters as well. This is just about prime time for an offshore adventure.

I expect our fishing to continue the way it has been in the next few weeks perhaps even better. The All-Day trips will continue to concentrate on these Flounder while Half-Day and Night trips will continue to fish for Croaks.

Remember we have several dates set for Offshore Tuna trips with the open boat as well.

If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would like to book a charter or reserve a spot for one of the Tuna trips please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Until Next Week Happy Fishing!
