Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman’s Wharf Fishing Report July 14th, 2005

I I would like to apologize for the late report. My update was supposed to be out a couple of days ago. Cyberspace is a wonderful thing I just wish I knew more about it and where my report actually went when I thought that I had sent it to the webmaster.

I have a hard enough time writing a report when the fishing is real good and there is a lot to talk about. I have an even harder time when the fishing is the way it has been for the last couple of days. I don’t want to tell you that the fishing is bad. First off, it really isn’t that bad, in fact it has had some moments of greatness since my last report. However these moments have been shadowed by some real moments of misery.

We continue to target Flounder and Black Sea Bass with the all-day trips, and Mother Nature continues to be in charge! After my last report we have seen some of our best fishing and we have seen some of our worst. We even had a day off which is the first time the all-day trip laid at the dock in over forty some days. Hard rain covered our area last Friday and not even one sole showed up to brave the elements.

Our weather cleared up for the weekend in fact the weather was so nice and calm that we used this as an excuse for the weekend sting. I could try to explain a slow drift to you but you would just have to experience it to believe it. What little breeze we did have seemed to always oppose the current and the boats just sat perfectly still. We couldn’t have laid better if we were at anchor! Not exactly conducive to good drift fishing. We did catch a few nice fish but certainly not enough for my liking. This phenomenon lasted both Saturday and Sunday. The most we drifted either day was the length of a few football fields. Thus the weekend sting. These fish have been spread out over miles of bottom and at times it would not be uncommon for us to drift for at least half of a mile during a good drift.

Five-year-old Harry Sphohn from Augustine Beach was out during one of those moments of greatness and is shown here proudly displaying one of the many Flounder he caught with me during his two outings last week. You can tell by Harry’s smile that he is hooked! There were a lot of nice Fluke landed over the past seven days but not quite as many big ones as the previous couple of weeks. Rick Crawl from Reading, PA, had one of the bigger fish last week shown here with his pool winning six pound class Flattie. Even though several limits of fish were landed on some of the trips last week I still have to call this fishing slow. Hopefully it won’t be long before we can mix in a few other species of fish during these slow periods to make for a little better action. It was so tough on Saturday afternoon that even a pick on Skates and Sea Robins looked good! There is still an abundance of fish around, we just need the right conditions to prove it.

Half-day trips continue to have steady action up in the Bay with Croakers and a few Fluke, however even this fishery is subject to conditions. Captain Mike reports good action but he just can’t seem to do it on every trip. This is one of the downsides of the half-day trips, lots of times the fish are biting in between trips or better in the morning than afternoon. The evening trips seem to have the best consistency these past few days. It could be boat traffic or just when the fish bite the best. Full night trips have finished for the year. Capt. H.D. is now gearing up for what promises to be a good Tuna fishing season. We have a lot of 22hr. trips on the schedule in the upcoming weeks on the head boat. The number of passengers will be limited on these overnight trips so make your plans now. Tuna have turned on over the last couple of weeks with loads of Bluefins and quite a few nice Yellowfins having already been brought into the docks by private and charter boats.

If you would like more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you want to make a reservation pleases give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

As I stated earlier my original report was to come out a couple of days ago. The only thing that has really changed is; today 7/13 was the best day on Fluke since last Wednesday. Nothing real big, but lots of fish, and lots of limits. It’s nice to have a drift. Croaker fishing up in the Bay has also become red hot! Loads of nice sized Croaks have come to the docks the last two days.

Until Next Week Happy Fishing!
