Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report June 8, 2004

For three days after I wrote my last fishing report I was hoping that anyone who had just read the report was not out fishing with me because they would surely call me a liar. The middle of last week sure lacked the luster of the previous weeks' production.

Perhaps it was the Full moon, maybe it was the hard running tides, or maybe it was just that the fish are still in charge and always will be. Whatever the case, I'm glad that the good days of fishing still out number the bad! We really did have a couple of slow days.

The bright side is that the majority of the fish that we have been catching are very nice sized. Our biggest Sea Bass of the spring have been coming over the rails. Not in the big numbers that we have seen in years past but enough to keep everyone's interest. Even though we were hard pressed to see a limit last week most anglers walked away with more than enough for a meal and quite possibly the biggest Bass that they had ever caught.

We weighed in over 14 citation sized fish last week off of the All-Day trips. Several of these fish approached the 4 to 5lb. mark. Most of our fishing has still been on the anchor, fishing over wrecks and artificial reefs, however as more Sea Bass move inshore we will be able to spend a lot more time on the drift as long as the weather and the currents cooperate.

Monday's trip (6/7) saw the most Flounder that we have seen all year. Excellent weather provided an optimal drift and the fish were biting. We caught more than two dozen Flounder and were able to keep most of them! We also had a steady pick on Sea Bass. Most of the Sea Bass were small but they provided good action and anglers kept anywhere from 15 to 20 fish by day's end.

I expect to have more drifting trips like this in the near future. It seems as though there is a nice spread of Bass on the open bottom now and obviously a few Flounders. As long as we can get the right drift this may be our best bet for catching a nice mess of fish. I am also looking forward to spending time anchored over productive pieces of bottom when the drift is too hard. This has proven to be a lot of fun in the past with some mixed bag catches and lots of action for everyone.

Our Half-Day boat has been getting out on almost every trip now. They also have been catching Sea Bass, both on the open bottom as well as on the anchor. This is the perfect trip for youngsters just getting started or anyone that can't spend the whole day out on the water. Half-Day trips sail daily at 8:00, 1:00 pm. and 6:00 pm. The evening trip has been a little iffy in the middle of the week but as more schools finish up for the year, this trip will have enough patrons to go every night.

A special congratulation goes out this week to Bill Hughes for the biggest fish. Bill landed a Thresher Shark this past week weighing in at 297 pounds while fishing specifically for Threshers aboard the Charter boat Miss Kirsten with Capt. Vince and his old mate Nick. This was no doubt an outstanding catch!

Fishing is heating up now and this is a great time to try your luck. Surface water temperatures have risen to about 63 to 64 degrees in the Ocean and there are reports of 70+ degree water up in the Delaware Bay. Bottom temps in the Ocean have finally reached the 50-degree mark. With temperatures like this you can expect just about anything to happen.

Until next time Happy Fishing!
