Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report April 20, 2004

After another week of rain and wind, nice weather allowed us to get away from the docks again this past weekend. Nobody had been out since Easter and it was like starting all over again. Water temperatures had cooled down and the Mackerel had actually pushed back down the beach. We searched for the better part of the day and finally by late in the afternoon we stumbled into a nice school of biters that saved the day for us. Even though we didn’t load up like we had done on trips last weekend, anglers ended up with a descent amount of fish and they were real nice in size.

As more boats ventured out over the weekend more fish were found. Most of the commercial fisherman took off to the south where the best concentrations of these fish were located. This is good news for those that are hoping to still get a trip in on the Mack’s this spring. Knowing that these fish our to the south make it likely that we will have them for at least another week, if not more. By Sunday’s trip we were back to filling up the coolers again and things are looking very promising for the upcoming week.

I have actually been out for four days in a row now, which is a milestone so far this year. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will continue to get away from the docks to take advantage of these Mackerel while they are here.

Today was the closest to home that I have been so far this year indicating that the fish are on the move. Warmer temps this week could make anything happen so if you want these fish, NOW IS THE TIME!

We also had a 12-hour trip sail this past Saturday. Tau tog up to 10 pounds were the catch of the day. We did see some of the first Sea Bass of the year that were within 20 miles of the beach. Most anglers caught a limit of Blackfish on this trip, but only a few Sea Bass were landed. Seeing these Bass was a good sign though, and I think that within a couple of weeks we should have some descent Sea Bass fishing fairly close to home.

Our Daily boat will continue to sail for Mackerel as long as we can make a good catch on them. Sea Bass will follow in the weeks to come along with a few Blackfish. We will be running another 12 hr trip this coming Saturday and I would expect to see both Sea Bass And Tog. There are still spots available for this trip if you are interested.
