Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report March 31, 2004

The big news for fishing out of the Wharf this past week would be the return of the Mackerel. We resumed with the All day 8-hr trips on Friday and were pleasantly surprised to see plenty of Mack’s right out of the gate!
I ran the Thelma Dale IV on Fri, Sat, and Sunday and each trip was a success! Sunday’s trip provided the most action with some anglers catching 60 to 100 fish. Friday and Saturday also saw good numbers of fish with some folks jigging up to 25 or 30 plus good-sized Mackerel.

Good weather allowed us to travel the thirty some miles needed to get to the area that these fish have been located. There seemed to be a real nice spread of Mackerel and conditions are looking good for a nice long run, with fish being caught over an eighty- mile stretch up and down the coast. With the Water temperature just now reaching 43 degrees, this will most certainly assure a good three to four week season.

Bad weather and lack of sponsorship has kept us tied to the dock so far this week but we are ready to go every day if we can just get a break with the weather and be blessed with a few folks. I fully anticipate getting away from the dock again daily for the Mackerel Thursday or Friday.

Our first 2004 12-hr. wreck trip sailed Saturday morning with Capt. H.D. at the helm. This trip did not fare quite as well. H.D. fished several wrecks in the 100 to 160ft. range and barely had enough fish to feed a sick cat! I spoke with him on Sunday afternoon and he was just glad that the trip was over. Water temps are still too cold for the Sea Bass to be found in these depths and it seemed as though that the Blackfish were just not biting on this day.

I am sorry to say that the last 18-hr extended wreck trip was cancelled due to weather on Sunday and will not be rescheduled. Northeast winds of up to 30 knots were in the forecast for offshore along with 12-ft. waves and the decision to scrub this trip was made early Saturday morning. We will however continue to run 12 hr trips every Saturday until the middle of May.

I would expect to fish for Blackfish on the next couple of these 12 hr. trips especially if there is any wind at all. H.D. does plan to travel a good distance if the weather is nice in hopes of seeing some Big Blackfish and some Sea Bass as they make their move inshore. Some of the better bottom fishing now for Tau Tog however can be had within 5 to 10 miles from the beach.
