Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report October 22, 2004

After a three week nonstop roll of fishing every day mother nature has given us a couple days tied to the docks. Not a lot has changed on the fish catching front since my last report, but I suspect that after this last bout with heavy Northeast winds, things might be a little different.

Wind has been playing a major roll in our fishing efforts over the past couple of weeks but for the most part we have managed to pull off some very good days with catches of fish despite some adverse conditions. One thing about wreck fishing is that rough seas seem to move the bait and the fish around as they seek out structure for safety and food. If you can get lucky enough to find a fresh movement of these fish you can capitalize on catching them. Sometimes they just seem to show up overnight. We have had no problem finding them, in fact anglers have been complaining about catching too many fish on most trips!

Slowly but surely the cooler night air temperatures of last week have caused the water temperatures to drop. Ocean water temperature was as low as 65 at one point last week and some portions of the Delaware Bay have seen temperature dips as low as 62 degrees. Fish have most definitely been on the move as a result of these drops in temperature, and fishermen have been catching fish everywhere.

Whatever your fall fishing pleasure of choice may be I would expect good luck in the upcoming weeks. Surf fishermen have been doing well with Snapper Blues, a few Trout and some Stripers. Offshore anglers have still been seeing some good numbers of Tuna fish, and inshore anglers will have a choice of some of the best wreck fishing of the fall season with either Sea Bass or Tautog or fishing the rips in the mouth of the Bay for a trophy Rockfish.

Our fall headboat schedule at the Wharf is designed to accommodate your fishing needs. We will be running both Wreck trips as well as Striper trips until the middle of December. Wreck trips will sail daily at 7:00 a.m. and the Striper boat is set to sail at 8:00 a.m. We also will be running 12 hr. Wreck trips every Saturday morning until December 1st departing at 5:00 a.m. We still have two 10 hr. special Tautog trips on the schedule over the next few weeks. Both of these trips are set up for the middle of the week on Wednesdays.

In a nutshell gang things are starting to really heat up even though the water is cooling down. Our Wreck fishing has been exceptionally good. Even though the size of some of the Sea Bass has been on the small side the sheer numbers have more than made up for the smaller fish. Stripers have just starting to come into Lewes over the past few days and reports of fish that are already being landed in other areas promise that this years fall Striper run will certainly be one to remember.

If you would like more information on trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would like to make a reservation for a special trip please give us a call at (302) 645-8862.

Until Next Week Happy Fishing! .
