Another pretty solid week of catching fish here at the Wharf! Just about every targeted species that you might expect to see this time of the year is being caught. Flounder, Croaker, Blues, Sea Bass, Triggers, Kingfish you name it and we have likely seen it.
My all day trips are still seeing mainly the Flatties with a mix of Blues, Croakers or Sea Bass depending on which way we go once we clear the inlet. While most of my fishing has been up in the Delaware Bay for a couple of weeks, I have also been back out front working the old grounds and the artificial reefs. We seem to find good action on just about every trip however the throwback ratio has hurt us on a few occasions with many a heartbreaking 17-inch plus fish that just won’t make the grade. More limits of nice Flounder have been landed this past week than any other week so far to date. They aren’t all too small, sometimes it just seems that way!
Our Half-Day trips are having continuing success with the Croakers. Some days naturally are better than others with these fish but every day at least one, if not all three trips have had great success with high numbers of Croakers. The size also is improving; average fish are about a foot long with many of the bigger ones well over fifteen inches and into the two-pound class coming over the rails.
These past few weeks we have been blessed with some very nice weather and water temperatures have been soaring. Bay water on the average is about 74 degrees with Ocean temps close behind. Water clarity in both the Ocean and the Bay has been outstanding. Fish have been on the move and are showing up in a lot of different locations making options readily available for most situations. It’s looking as if the month of August could be a very fishy month.
The offshore scene is also holding up well with both Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna being landed regularly on the inshore lumps and the edges of the canyons. Our charter boat Lewestown Lady has consistently been landing Tuna in the sixty pound class on every trip. Capt. Benny still has a few dates available before the White Marlin Open starts if anyone is interested in a make up trip. We will continue taking names for these make up trips until our headboat starts later this month.
Good news for anyone interested in taking the younger ones out before the hectic school schedules start, we will continue with the KIDS GO FREE promotion until the end of August. Any child under twelve years of age when accompanied by an adult will ride for free on any trip sailing out of the Wharf!
Full Day and Half-day trips will continue to sail seven days a week. I will concentrate mostly with the Flounders on my All-Day trips while your best bet for Croakers will be on the Half-Day trips. As I stated earlier there is a nice variety available now so you can expect to catch just about anything on either trip. If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would like to book a charter or get on the Tuna make up list please email me or give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.
Until Next Week Happy Fishing!
