Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report July 18, 2007

fish lewesIt’s hard to believe that the month of July is half over but here we are three weeks into July and the Summer season is rapidly passing on. Really not a whole lot of changes since my last report, typical fishing, some days much better than others, and we are starting to see a nice variety of fish.

My full day trips have been split between the Delaware Bay and the Ocean. I must say that my best action has actually been up in the Bay or in the Mouth of the Bay. While the Ocean has been giving up some decent catches it has been more “condition sensitive” so to say. Fishing in the deep water of the old grounds can be very frustrating when things don’t go just right. There are years when it’s worth using a pound of lead risking loss of rigs on the bottom because the fishing is that good, however so far this just doesn’t seem to be that year. The fish out front are spread too thin it seems to make a good day of it, unless everything clicks just right. Saturday was a classic example of this; beautiful ocean, nice breeze, very few fish! Naturally the nice gentle Ocean breeze was against the current bringing our drift to a halt. That’s Fishing.

fish lewesOur last several days have been spent up in the Delaware Bay and in the mouth of the bay. Results have been decent. While it is still pick fishing some very nice fish have been brought over the rails. Flounder continues to be the main target however we have been seeing Croakers, Blues, an occasional Bass and even a few small Trout and Kingfish. I expect action like this with a mixed bag of fish to continue for several more weeks. We are not loading up with fish but most anglers are getting in on some good action and catching more than enough for a good fish supper.

fish lewesOur Half-Day trips continue to see good to excellent action with Croakers. Some trips have seen top hooks landing as many as twenty or more Croakers. These fish while still considered small to mediums have been getting a little bigger almost daily. Some Croakers have been in the neighborhood of 1 1/2 to 2 pounds while the average fish will be about ten to twelve inches in length. This action should continue for the rest of the summer and will likely get even better with the nicer sized fish. More and more Croakers seem to be filtering into the Bay all the time.

fish lewesThe offshore action for Tuna remains steady with both Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna being landed on the inshore lumps and edges of the canyons. If anyone is interested in getting the jump on our headboat fishing for these Tuna Capt. Benny and his mate Dave have compiled a list of several people that are interested in make up trips with the Lewestown Lady. If you don’t mind fishing with friends you haven’t met yet or you just can’t get a big enough group together to charter for an offshore trip this could be the opportunity that you have been waiting for. If you are interested please contact the office and ask for either Benny or Dave or you can just e-mail me with your information and we will get back to you with the dates that are open. Our regular headboat trips for Tuna on the big boats will begin later this summer.

fish lewesIf you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would like to Book a charter please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.
