Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Feb. 20, 2007

fish lewesWinter weather has dominated our area for a few weeks in a row now taking away some of those great mild days that spoiled us in January. Water temperatures have plummeted in just the last couple of weeks and we have actually been seeing ice on the Bay and in the mouth of the Bay as well as all along the canal.

We had a nice break from the windy weather this past weekend, which allowed the offshore trip to sail on Saturday. Even though the catch was not as good as it was on the prior offshore trip several anglers landed well into double digits of Bass that would weigh up to five pounds. Top hooks would land a limit or close to a limit and low hooks only a few. These fish were not committing suicide. I was not on board for this trip but I understand just holding bottom became a chore with the strong running currents. At times folks were using as much as a couple of pounds of lead or even more just to stay down on the bottom. I don’t care how good of an angler you are these conditions will bring the best of you to your knees! Understandably the guys with the electric reels had an edge on some of the traditional winders.

fish lewesOur next 18hr. trip will sail on March 3rd departing the docks midnight Friday night and we are accepting reservations now. This weekend we will be sailing with just the regular 8-hour trip departing at 7:00 a.m. fishing for Tog. Even though we have seen a dive in the water temperatures close to shore the deeper waters and offshore temperatures are close to or above normal for this time of the year and the outlook is good for both the Sea Bass as well as the Tog for the upcoming trips.

If you would like more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would like to reserve a spot for one of the upcoming 18 hour trips please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Until Next Time Happy Fishing!
